Budapest Tourism Office - Introduction
The Budapest Tourism Office (BTO) was created by the Municipality of Budapest in April 1996 with the aim of bringing together under one roof those tourism-related promotional activities that had up until that time been undertaken by a range of separate agencies. Nowadays, BTO contributes to enhancing and promoting the image of Budapest in a wide variety of ways. Internationally, it targets particular visitor groups where it is considered most likely to meet with success, it provides all branches of the tourism industry with comprehensive information, and of course it acts as a principal source of information for visitors once they have arrived here.
One of the basic functions of BTO is to furnish visitors with tourist information. This it does through its network of 6 tourist information offices (situated at Liszt Ferenc tér, Sütő utca, the Castle District and Budapest Airport Terminals 2A, 2B and Ferihegy1).
BTO's website (www.budapestinfo.hu) contains an unrivalled amount of tourist information in several languages. As well as all the basic information expected there is an events database containing details of a huge range of entertainment opportunities, special events, festivals and other attractions.
BTO publishes two new free brochures each year. Widely distributed, the Budapest Guide - which contains essential visitor information - and the City Map are available in no fewer than seventeen languages.
Another means BTO employs to raise the international profile of Budapest is BudapeStudy. This involves promoting the Hungarian capital to groups of foreign journalists, travel writers (numbering more than 120 per year). The hope then is that they will publish positive articles and promotions about Budapest in their home media - both traditional written media and electronic media - and so keep a positive image of the city in the public eye for as long as possible.
BTH News, published regularly in English, German and Hungarian, is a free e-mail news digest containing topical articles and information of interest to visitors to Budapest and all those involved in the tourism industry. It is distributed to over 3,000 offices and agencies abroad and 1,000 organizations and travel agents within Hungary.
BTO also organizes events in its own right, for example the Budapest Christmas Market which takes place in the weeks leading up to Christmas on Vörösmarty Square.
The Budapest Card is also run by BTO. Since its introduction over a hundred thousand visitors have now taken advantage of the free use of public transport and discounted admission to museums and attractions that it offers.
